10 Tips For Winterizing Your Car

The snow is here and you’re out on the roads getting ready for the holidays so we’ve compiled a list of 10 Tips to ready your car for all that driving. 1. KEEP AN EMERGENCY KIT IN YOUR CAR.  Your kit should include at least the following AS WELL AS A PLAN IF YOU GET STUCK: a blanket extra boots and gloves an extra set of warm clothes extra water and food, including hard candies an ice scraper a small shovel a flashlight windshield washer fluid windshield wipers flares jumper cables a tool kit tire chains a tire gauge a spare tire with air in it tire-changing equipment a first-aid kit paper towels a bag of abrasive material such as sand, salt or non-clumping kitty litter, which can provide additional traction if a tire gets stuck in snow. 2. GET YOUR OIL CHANGED Are you approaching the time for a 30,000-mile full service for your vehicle? If so, don’t procrastinate! Among other things, the service should include an oil change, and the oil used should have the right viscosity, or thickness, for your vehicle at this time of year. Oil tends to thicken as it gets colder, and if it’s too thick it won’t do the best job of keeping your engine lubricated. Check your owner’s manual for guidance about which oil to use in different climates and temperatures. 3. REPLACE YOUR WINDSHIELD WIPERS When’s the last time you replaced your windshield wiper blades? Low visibility can make driving in cold weather extremely dangerous, so it’s important to make sure the wiper blades are up to par. It drives like a sports car, eager and agile and instantly responsive. But it’s also as smoothly effortless as a Rolls-Royce, can carry almost as much stuff as a Chevy Equinox, and is more efficient than a Toyota Prius. Oh, and it’ll sashay up to the valet at a luxury hotel like a supermodel working a Paris catwalk. By any measure, the Tesla Model S is a truly remarkable automobile, perhaps the most accomplished all-new luxury car since the original Lexus LS 400. That’s why it’s our 2013 Car of the Year.Read more: http://www.motortrend.com/oftheyear/car/ 1301_2013_motor_trend_car_of_the_year_tesla_model_s/viewall.html#ixzz2Kt6rEv7t...

Do Your Car Keys Weigh Too Much?

Keychains are a great way to organize all the little things you need in day-to-day life, but adding too much to yours could damage your ignition and prevent you from starting your car. How much is too much? Probably less than you might think. Car Talk‘s Click and Clack suggest limiting your load to 9 keys or less, but we’ve heard that 3 Lbs is often the weight ignitions are designed to bear without undue wear. Why is weight bad for your ignition? The weighted key will put stress on the tumblers, particularly as the car bounces and shakes down the road, causing them to wear irregularly and eventually fail. A worn tumbler doesn’t engage the locking mechanism in the precise way necessary, meaning your key will no longer be able to turn the lock. To prevent long-term wear on our ignitions, we separate our car keys from our general key chains, leaving just the car key and key fob to place as little load as possible on the ignition. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle. Republished...

The Tap House Grill is hosting the event. What could become a new Glen Ellyn tradition kicks off Saturday morning. The Tap House Grill will be hosting the first of five planned “Family Cookouts” before Glenbard West High School Football games. The family-friendly events will be held on the site of J & R Auto Repair at Pennsylvania Avenue and Park Boulevard. The cookouts are planned for five choice Saturdays over the course of the football season, said Danny Sronkoski, owner of the Tap House Grill and North Side Bar & Grill. The first game of the season, the Hilltoppers will host Wheaton Warrenville South. “I have had this idea for a while. I really had to find some private property to do it on. J & R was really nice to let us use his property,” Sronkoski said. “The idea has been brewing for a couple years now and I decided to make it happen.” The hope is that it becomes a new tradition for families to come downtown and enjoy the atmosphere before the football games or just enjoy some fun downtown, he said. A special menu of items will be available including wings, a walking burrito – which can be carried and eaten, a bag o’donuts for kids and a jalapeno and cheddar stuffed chicken breast, he said. Beverages will be limited to a few types of beer, a bloody Mary bar, Gatorade and water. The business had to go...
